Allison Joseph, one of our mentors, is a student researcher majoring in Environmental Analysis and Women’s Psychology. During her studies, Allison would be forced to take a medical leave from school, during which she would tirelessly fight to recover from anorexia and bulimia. Her personal journey has greatly influenced her work in South East Asia, as she has created the “Ideal Woman” project. Working in both Thailand and Myanmar, Allison’s writing and photography explores the challenges, victories, and diversity of experiences held by women and young girls.
Through participatory social action research and qualitative interviews, “The Ideal Woman” project empowers and challenges women to examine, express, document and create their own feminine identity. Utilizing a variety of techniques, including theater, art, photography, and discussion, Allison facilitates a safe space for women and young girls to develop a greater understanding regarding their own perceptions of womanhood.
